Alaska Dispatch - GCI's terrestrial broadband service project takes a big step forward

A telecommunications project that will extend terrestrial broadband service for the first time to Bristol Bay and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta has reached its first milestone, and GCI officials said today that they expect to begin offering service in early 2012.

In addition to laying 43 miles of fiber optic cable from Igiugig to Levelock in the Bristol Bay region of Southwest Alaska, GCI employed the skills of a construction hard hat diver, who laid fiber optic cable for 1,500 feet under the ice along the bottom of the Kvichak River in March, by diving in and out of holes cut every 350 feet across the river, said GCI's Director of Rural Broadband Development, Krag Johnsen.
